COROMANDEL LIFE 2017 SPRING / HOLIDAY

Yes, Spring is in the air! And what a welcome

feeling it is.

I was recently telling an old friend from Hawaii

how blessed I feel to live in such a ‘heavenly’

place. And even if I can’t be outside enjoying

it, I get the next best thing – to view it from my

desk every day. Rain or shine, I look at those

clear ocean waters, Mt Paku across the estuary,

Slipper Island, the Aldermans and beyond

Though it seemed I was watching a bit too

many rain showers these past few months,

there were also a lot of sunbreaks and their

pals, the rainbows! Many days we saw up

to 5 forming, in totally different shapes and

directions. I had found my silver lining.

Another boost came when artist Barbara von

Seida sent a selection of paintings to consider

for the cover – there was no doubt that we

wanted ‘Dreaming of Spring’ – great name and

great painting – so vibrant and full of life. It was

the perfect way to greet Spring and carry us

through the Christmas holidays with those bold

splashes of reds and greens.

NEW HAND ON DECK

Many of you know that I have been looking for

another ‘right hand’ to help me with the day to

day responsibilities the magazine demands. I

have known that I need to stop those 80 hour

work weeks, reduce stress and focus on

staying healthy to keep that cancer at bay.

I am pleased to announce that Len Salt from

Whitianga has joined the team as Editing/

Business Manager. We are delighted to have

him on board – and I’m hoping this means I

can spend more time doing what I love: pulling

together those great stories that ‘celebrate the

people and places on the Coromandel’.

Coming off the Winter season, the Spring issue

can be a challenging time to bring in advertising

dollars, but not so much this time. It was quite

rewarding to have several new businesses

ring us to get in this issue and a few current

advertisers even increased the size of their ads.

It feels good to know they trust the results they

are getting – and this ultimately makes it

all

worthwhile, knowing the magazine works for

both readers and advertisers.

We could not produce the magazine without

those businesses, so please visit their stores

and use their services – and let them know

you saw their ad or learned about them from

Coromandel Life

. They make it possible to

continue producing this, the only lifestyle

magazine available reaching the entire

peninsula... and beyond.

Wishing you and yours a happy holiday season

– see you next year!

TAIRUA HAS

A NEW WHARF

After six months and $1.4M, Tairua has

its ‘new’ wharf, boat ramp and floating

pontoons at Mary’s Beach.

In August, the facility opened for public use

and ferry service has resumed. The official

opening was held 30 September, which

included a blessing and ribbon cutting by

Mayor Sandra Goudie.

“It’s excellent to see this project finished

within budget and on time,” says Bob

Renton, Tairua-Pauanui Community Board

Chair. Construction began in March this

year.

The existing boat ramp was widened and

extended to improve launching at low tide

and an additional two new 30-metre floating

pontoons were installed to deal with the tidal

flows of the harbour and improve launching

safety – one floats alongside the wharf and

the second is angled on the seaward side.

These improvements will encourage more

commercial, charter, and fishing vessels to

the area, thus improving Tairua’s economy.

And who is Mary?

A Tairua pioneer! Her last

name was BEACH, and Mary was mother of

Eva, who died this summer. (See page 51.)
