Like Moore-Jones, Gauldie has also

painted war action in his position

as the official NZ Defence Force

Artist, a role he has held for 10 years

that has taken him to Afghanistan,

Antarctica, Tilamar East Timor and

the Solomon Islands.

“Matt is a vibrant, enthusiastic member

of the art community and has that

‘number eight wire’ quality and,

combined with a dry sense of humour,

will make for an entertaining speaker”,

said Trust Chairman Stuart Christie.

Mercury Bay Area School

to exhibit students’ art during tour

On Monday 7 March, the

Mercury Bay Art Escape’s

“Taste of the Tour” guest

speaker Matt Gauldie will

present a workshop for local

artists: ‘The Figure in Art...Portraiture and the Ace Up Your Sleeve’.

The workshop will focus on the role of portraiture in 2D and 3D art,

including some practical painting demonstrations, and look at technical

and practical implications of working in this field. No doubt Matt will also

reiterate the Gauldie mantra: paint what you know.

See more of Matt’s work at

www.mattgauldie.com to

get a feel for the

variety and style of his work. The workshop will be held from 9am – 1pm

at the Whitianga Art Group Rooms, 20 School Road, Whitianga. See

Five students of MBAS have thus far been recipients of Mercury Bay Art

Escape Trust Scholarships, including the above. And to recognise this

initiative, the Trust has included the school’s Visual Art Department in the

Open Studio Tour as guest exhibitors so that visitors

can appreciate the art education young New Zealanders

are receiving.

Visit the school on State Highway 25, Whititanga to

see a selection of student artwork including painting,
