SUMMER

CONCERT

31 January

W

hitianga is bracing for what promises to

be the concert of the year featuring rock

power houses

Huey Lewis & the News

,

REO

Speedwagon

, and

Melissa Etheridge

. This

day-long family event is Sunday, 31 January at the

Whitianga Waterways.

TWO TAUPO GROUPS OPEN AT 11:30 AM

Guitarist Paul Foulds and cover band The Blind

Venetians – were such a hit last year in Taupo,

that Greenstone was keen to have them open

for this year’s Summer Concert in Whitianga.

The Blind Venetians’ aim is to cater to the

audience’s taste and to get people dancing.

“Our songs range from classics to oldies”, says

lead vocalist/guitarist Corey Robinson. “From

hits by Elvis and the Doobie Brothers, through

to recent tracks from The Kings of Leon and

Sublime”. And expect a few originals, too!

Blues/rock guitarist Paul Foulds has been

playing his emotive style over 20 years. Paul

credits artists such as Eric Clapton, Gary Moore

and the Stevie Ray Vaughan as a few artists

who have influenced and shaped his style.

Concert Tour promoter and CEO of Greenstone

Entertainment, Amanda Calvert comments,

“A philosophy of the tour is to not only bring

over the high calibre of international artists to

our beautiful country but to also showcase NZ

artists who may not otherwise get to perform in

front of audiences the sizes of ours.”.

AN AFTERNOON OF HOT HEADLINERS

First legend up at 1pm is two-time Grammy

award winner, Melissa Etheridge, who has toured

NZ before. Interviewed 7 December from Los

Angeles on TVNZ’s

Good Morning

, Melissa

says, although she was a great fan of REO

Speedwagon when in high school, she’s not met

them. “But in 1988, I did open for Huey Lewis in

Europe – one of the first tours I ever did! We go

way back, so it will be great to see him again.”

“It’s a different world now for artists” shares

Melissa. “One can take control of their own

work and be their own business person.” She

“changed things up” herself and went

independent with her own record company a

few years ago. She has been “incredibly busy”

since making this choice, however, she shares,

“I don’t consider what I do work. I sing. I’m the

luckiest girl in the world.”

Breast cancer survivor and gay activist, Melissa

is now “ten years cancer free!” and healthier and

happier than she’s ever been. She admits that

“cancer changed my life and I’m glad it did. I

consider it a gift”. Her marriage last year to

partner, Linda, has contributed to that happiness

as well. “It was such a beautiful feeling to finally

have marriage equality in America.”

Melissa will share a couple of songs from her

new album,

This is Me,

but plans to focus on

doing “lots of the songs we all know and love...

and having a really good time.”

The ‘good times roll’ as classic rock continues

through the day from REO Speedwagon and

Huey Lewis & The News. It is the first visit to NZ

for both legendary groups.

REO Speedwagon notes its start from1967, but

it was 1980’s

Hi Infidelity

that generated millions

in sales, fueled by massive hit singles such as

“Keep On Loving You” and “Take It On the Run”.

Huey Lewis & the News, now together 36 years,

will get you dancing playing such megahits as

“Heart and Soul”, “I Want A New Drug” and

“Power of Love”.
