Tairua Wine Club closes the year with
Road Trip to Mills Reef

As much as it seemed a stretch to head out to a wine tasting so early,
that didn’t stop Tairuian Wine Club members from boarding two
vans by 8.45am Saturday December 5 to head to Mills Reef Winery in
Tauranga for our end of year road trip away (see next page).
Greeted by our ever-enthusiastic host Dan Shea on arrival, we soon were
enjoying a varied array of wines starting with a rather lovely Hawkes Bay
Methode Traditionelle. This found plenty of admirers with our crew and I
suspect it was what many members enjoyed as their bubbles on Xmas day!
We then sampled two whites from the Mills Reef Reserve range – a
delicious Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer – and their top line Elspeth
Chardonnay. Many thought that these youthful wines would benefit
from a wee bit more time in the bottle, but the potential of all 3 wines is
something to look forward to.
A few of us were lucky enough to try the Reserve Chardonnay from the
fantastic 2014 vintage and it was easy to see why Cuisine Magazine
awarded this stunner a gold 5 star and best buy... pure deliciousness!
We ended our tasting session with two reds from their Reserve range,
and it was these two wines that the members really appreciated. The
2014 Reserve Syrah and the 2014 Merlot Malbec were rich, fruity, full
bodied and smooth!! Both wines had oodles of appeal and it’s easy to
see why they have been awarded so highly in the Air NZ Wine Awards
and by judges Sam Kim and Raymond Chan.
Following this tasting we enjoyed a beautiful 3 course meal in their
stunning restaurant. Folks, if you ever get the chance to visit Mills Reef
Winery, make sure you plan to coincide with either lunch or dinner… I
guarantee that you will not be disappointed with the menu choices or the
food itself. Sublime!
Hauling ourselves back into the bus at the end of the meal, (no easy
feat!!) we concluded our trip with a wine tasting at the Wine Portfolio (Ex
Morton Estate) before arriving back in Tairua, happy and replete!
2016 Wine Club starts February 25. We have some great wineries lined
up again this year and I can’t wait to crack into it again! We generally
meet on the last Thursday of the month and bookings are essential. If you

‘Clearly’ my all-time favourite is the 5-star rated
Reserve Chardonnay, followed closely by its ‘stable
mate’ the Beachhead Chardonnay. It exhibits many
of the same characteristics at an attractive price point,
which means I can enjoy it even more often!
