Coromandel MP Scott Simpson attended the book launch at the Tairua

Library with editors Anne Stewart Ball, Pat Kake, and David Rushforth

(who previously wrote

Tales of Tairua

).

Second regional “tales of...” series

TRUE TALES

of the

Coromandel’s

Eastern Seaboard

Word was spreading: True tales were being

collected to capture stories and memories of

the Coromandel’s rich history. Now the 177-

page, 64-story

True Tales of the Coromandel’s

Eastern Seaboard

has been published, with

celebratory book launches mid-December at

the Tairua Library and the Whangamata RSA.

Anne Stewart Ball, one of the

Eastern Seaboard

editors, noted, “These stories are not about the

legends of logging nor the giants of goldmining,

but are stories experienced, or heard handed

down, by every day people”.

Included in this collection are tales (many with

photographs) – about a special fishing lure,

a shipwreck, camping before the settlement

road was built, road surveying - from areas

stretching from Whiritoa in the South to

Matarangi and Kennedy’s Bay in the North.

In the works are other “tales” series books,

and the Eastern tales joins the already-

published

True Tales of Northern Coromandel

(actually in 3 volumes)

from the Coromandel

Heritage Trust.

In 2011, Tairua’s David Rushforth published

Tales Of Tairua: Extracts From 29 Interviews

By The Tairua Oral History Group from 2004

to 2011.

He is also one of the editors of the

Eastern Tales book.

Books may be purchased for $35 at The

Treasury and Carsons Bookshop in Thames,

the Tairua Information Centre, and Take Note in

Whangamata.

Tales are still being collected for other books

covering Thames, Hauraki Plains, Paeroa/

Karangahake, east of the Waihou River, and

Waikino/Waitekauri.
