So many of the cultural, educational,
and natural riches we enjoy on the
Coromandel are inspired, created and
maintained by volunteers.
It really warms our hearts, sitting at our cozy
computers, to see photos of volunteers
rescuing wildlife, hacking trails through the
scrub, or repairing waterway boardwalks,
muck topping over their gumboots.
So we have been stoked seeing Facebook
posts about the volunteers hacking and
mucking ... and fundraising ... for the first two
segments of the Pauanui Tairua Trail, which
once completed will stretch 25km between
the communities, edging the Tairua Estuary.
This latest stage of the trail – 4.2km in length
– runs from Tangitarori/Tangiteroria Lane
south to Pauinui’s Duck Creek. It connects
to the existing 1.6km boardwalk and trail
through the Paunaui Waterways.
The entire track will be relatively flat, and
most segments not too far from residential
roadways, thus safer than remote bush trails.
The current section ends at the Duck Creek
area of Settlement Road. At the Pauanui end,
there is a simple segment loop suitable for
short rides or walks with the littlies, who will
certainly get a charge from riding atop the
clatter of boardwalks.
Ian Hopper (the visionary land developer
of the Pauanui community) and a group
of locals conceived of the idea for the
track. The original boardwalk from the
Pauanui Waterways through the mangroves
to Tangitarori/Tangiteroria Stream was
completed about ten years ago.
Trail Chairman Gary Fowler and wife Anne
(recent recipients of Pauanui’s Volunteer of
the Year Award from the Pauanui Sports and
Recreation Club) worked and fundraised
tirelessly to ensure the track was on a secure
footing.
Funding has come from a variety of sources,
the Hikuai Trust (through fundraising concerts
