Summer’s over...
but the fun GOES ON!
Enjoy area activities year round
A
utumn and even winter days can provide some fine weather for
enjoying outdoor activities. In April and May the temperature has
been known to climb as high as 25ºC. June to August offers average
daily temperatures of 13ºC - 15ºC (high 50ºs F).
Walks or a picnic on our beautiful beaches are fabulous any time of the year – and many
times you’ll have the place to yourself. Collect shells or practise for the popular Sand
Sculpture Contest held every January on Pauanui Beach where you’ll find some pretty
amazing creations.
Tables and toilets are located at the northern end of Tairua Beach and various locations
on Pauanui Beach – the south end, the Surf Club and Royal Billy Point.
Hikes in the Area
Tairua
Climb Paku.
Voted one of the top short walks on the Coromandel, you get awesome
360 degree views. It’s steep but short, and the 15-minute walk is well worth the effort.
(See 2011 Autumn issue).
Tairua Estuary Walk.
A level waterfront walk starting at the Pepe Bridge and ending
at the base of Paku. Lots of bird-sighting opportunities with descriptive markers along
the way.
Pauanui
Climb Mount Pauanui.
Not for the faint hearted, this fairly strenuous climb is well
worth the effort for the stunning vistas. Located at the south end of the beach.
Flat Rock/Cave Bay Walk
. This easy hike leaves the southern end of the beach at the
end of Pauanui Beach Road. Just 10 minutes walk to Flat Rock and 20 to Cave Bay. To
avoid the Dotterel nests, walk below the high tide mark.
Waterfall Walk
(see waterfall legend and walk in our last issue or online at www.
pakuviews.co.nz) Approximately 3kms from Waterways Roundabout on the main road to
Hikuai. An easy 20-min walk. Spectacular after rain.
Hikuai
Historic Gold Mines and Bush Walks.
The Puketui Valley and Broken Hills Recreation
Area offer a variety of hikes for everyone. You’re sure to spot a fantail, with waterfalls,
