Where are we?
About to go on an
adventure on one of those
glorious summer days.
Exploring some awesome
caves along the coast
with Hahei Explorer.

W
hat a Summer!
We thought we were
fortunate with last year’s stellar weather,
but this year those fine days spread over into
most of Autumn, too. How fortunate are we?
We took advantage of the lovely weather to
preview our Road Trip going further north
along the East coast, up Kuaotunu way. It took
us to what we believe are some of the finest
beaches in the world!
And we also savoured two sunny weekends in
March visiting artists’ studios for the Mercury
Bay Art Escape. That’s how we discovered
Claire Elliot, the guest artist joining Charlotte
Giblin in the
Road Trip
.
We’re pleased to hear that so many of you
are enjoying
Coromandel Life
. Our biggest
problem has been keeping everyone stocked.
Shop owners tell us the magazine has become
so popular it’s flying off the shelves. Let us
know if you’re not able to find a copy or if your
shop would like to be a distribution point.
STORY SURPRISES
We’re always amazed at the way our stories
pull together, at the
end,
of course – with new
info and last minute coincidences. It’s like
all these bit-and-bobs are floating in the air,
and just before we go to press, these puzzle
pieces fall into our laps, assembled. Enticing
us to adjust and edit and redesign for these
‘have-to-include’ gems.
We decided to write more about Kuaotunu and
its gold rush past. After doing much research,
it was a bit of surprise to discover that people
we’d known all along were sitting on the
region’s history, quite literally!

‘Stargazer’ Alastair Bickell lives right ON the
the old School of Mines land, and our Coffee
LaLa friends live on the old Try Fluke mine
land. And after meeting artist Lutz Gaebler
at the launch party for MBAE, we found that
the mine’s ore-roasting shafts Alastair had
mentioned were actually on
his
property! Lutz
then scored us a photo for the story.
Sometimes we think the magazine will never
be finished!
Somebody stop us!
My letter
wasn’t
finished when designer Carol
suggested, “Let’s fill it with
some images we wanted to
use... like the
Rainbow Warrior
life ring photo I just found!”
And a blogger’s photo of
historic telephoto lens cases
and a wooden whiskey box.
Another late favourite was this
doggie. We will let you figure
where we would have put
these, given more space.
For the bee story,
were going to use
a classic Bruegel
drawing, “The
Beekeepers,” till
we realised the
symbolism made
it a hotly-debated religious drawing. However
we worked in several stranger than fiction bee
photos, just for fun. The Bruegel, however...a
bigger story than we had room for. Sigh. Well,
there’s always NEXT issue...
Many of you recognise
Michelle McEwan
as the vet nurse in Tairua.
We can now add another talent she brings to the community – she has
recently completed her Diploma in Digital Photography with the Southern
Institute of Technology. Keen to put her skills to practice, we are pleased
that Michelle shares her gift at ‘capturing life’ with
Coromandel Life.
This issue, see her photos of pets, youth rugby, the Paku-backed Tairua
Marina, the sunrise photo on the back cover and the wall montage at
Shells (a challenging shot...we tried!). Michelle tells us “growing up, there
was always a camera in the house”. She kept at it, and eventually hubby
Brent encouraged her to follow her passion. And we are glad she did!
