The launch of Bruce Gilberd’s book,
Ka the
Falcon,
drew many to the Tairua Library in
November to hear him speak.
This unique story is told through the eyes
and memory of Ka, a New Zealand Falcon.
The reader is taken through a history of the
formation and settlement of Aotearoa and
in particular the Coromandel Peninsula and
Tairua, where Bruce resides.
Although the book is intended for 8-10 year olds, it will be enjoyed by all
ages with the insightful and educational footnotes provided throughout
the narrative. Illustrations are by Marco Dela Torre.

PAEROA
, known as ‘the best little town in the middle of everything’, has
a terrific line-up of events this Summer (see calendar page 30-31) and the
‘Battle of the Streets’ is one of them.
This full day of motorcycle circuit racing began as a daydream in 1991,
‘over a pint’, when Bob Jeffery suggested to friends Colin Lynch and
Sharland Waikato that the streets of Paeroa could be turned into a street
circuit. They enrolled other friends in the scheme and now over 350
community members are volunteers or sponsors of this ambitious event.
The 1.52km circuit starts near the centre of town on SH2 (Belmont/
Normanby Road) and takes a ‘hacksaw’ shape as it rounds back. Riders
reach speeds of 280kph and sidecars close to 220kph along the main
straight. Wow!
Practice starts around 8am, followed by races in 11 classes.

With Bruce at the book launch was Ka, his puppet, who will be travelling with
him to help tell the falcon’s story to students as he visits Coromandel schools.
