COROMANDEL LIFE
SPRING 2013
Café
Capers
Café-hopping is a
favourite activity on the
Coromandel and here’s
some observations from a few
contributors and foodies on the
scene
– Tovi Daly
Hot Waves Café
has a reputation as one
of the best eateries on the Coromandel with
many local favourites like the yummy Poached
Chicken shown. Pop in (only a minute walk
from Hot Water Beach) and you’ll find out why.
The menu changes regularly offering delicious
homemade food, great breakfasts, vegan/
gluten free
options, and
yummy cookies
and cupcakes to
have with your
Allpress coffee.
Check out
their theme
nights: like build your own pizza, quiz night,
Six Course Tastings, and the ‘Scallop Festival
Recovery Night’.
The outdoor dining patio, nestled in the native
garden, is delightful on warm sunny days. It
was one of my mother-in-law’s top spots while
visiting; she loved both the visiting gulls and
the potato leek soup.
And here you can enjoy live music and open
mic (Sundays), generally weekends, but check
their schedule. Thurs, 7 Nov catch a dinner
concert with Duo Jackson, playing a fusion of
classical, Gypsy, jazz, Latin, and flamenco.
This café is multi-sensory: food and coffee,
invigorating sea air, inspiring art gallery, and
regular gig nights make Hot Waves Café a
‘must-visit’. LIKE them on Facebook for more.
A few of Sandra Scott’s favourite
spots Whitianga & North:
Castle Rock Café
,
situated at Te Rerenga
along the Coast Road, is a great place to
boost the energy levels with a Coffee Lala
and a delicious made-on-the-premises treat,
a generous-sized, fresh and tasty meal, or
if you’re on the run grab a takeaway. Owner
Andy Corles is a well-known local favourite,
having previously worked at The Dunes
at Matarangi and been a St Johns First
Responder. His new summer menu includes
a scrummy Warm Chicken and Camembert
Salad dressed with one of his exceptional
original recipe vinaigrettes. One of their spicy
chutneys or vinegars from the shop might
tempt you too.
The Church
restaurant in Hahei is under new
management, by Tairua local and long time
regional chef, Nicolas
Roberts. His experience
brings
duende!
to the
landmark, with a spicy new
menu. Spanish tapas, with
a kooky Kiwi twist are a
specialty – sourcing locally
grown ingredients. Each
night’s “specials menu”
offers tapas plus main-
sized courses, enabling you to construct a
beautiful three course feast.
An extensive wine and drinks menu boasts
almost a dozen of each craft/micro beers and
ciders – all NZ made and brewed.
The restaurant, housed in a 1916 clapboard
church, is available for function rentals. Near
Hahei, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach,
this unique venue is perfect for dining or any
holding any event. Bookings rec: 07 866 3797.
At the
Hahei Beach
Café
things are
really cookin’ in the
kitchen. Rather the
kitchen is cookin’! New owners, Rachael Lloyd
and Pat Curtis hope to carry on the traditions
of the popular Luna Café, owned by Pat and
Tom Morgan for 11 years.
Just in time for summer, they’ve added an
outdoor deck overlooking the children’s
playground and changed the courtyard
considerably. We also noticed other great
improvements in the kitchen and interior as well.
Menuwise, be sure to check the blackboard
for daily specials and local favourites like
the Turkish Eggs (pictured) and Creamy
Mushrooms on Toast. For lunch enjoy their
popular Seafood Chowder and Open Chicken
Sandwich. And, of course, no one can resist
their decadent variety of luscious cakes with a
steamy Coffee Supreme coffee.
