COROMANDEL LIFE
SPRING 2013
Tairua Butchery
entered one product in the NZ Bacon and Ham
Competition, and was awarded a bronze medal for their Manuka
Smoked Streaky Bacon.
The aromatics of the wood contribute an exquisite flavour to the
meat, cured right there in the Main Road Butchery.
Owner/butcher Brett Collins said, “Getting third was a great honour and
surprise. Next year, we are going for the gold!” This is the first time they have entered the
competition, competing against 139 contenders.
The Pepe now serves both Brett’s award winning bacon and smoked salmon. Eggs Beni
with that smoked salmon – the BEST. We could eat breakfast there everyday!
This well respected butchery offers a wide variety of meats, including wild pigs and sports
fish like marlin. Order your hams, turkeys and roasts for the holidays. Also, while you’re
there, don’t forget to “bring home the bacon!” and tell them you saw them in
Coromandel
Life
. See Facebook page for photos and news of other smoked delicacies.
Coffee LaLa
has added another award to their trophy
wall, a bronze. That makes 14 New Zealand coffee
awards so far for this boutique artisan coffee roasting
business.
Coffee roasters Nedilka Radjkovich and Mark Tugendhaft work their magic in a secluded
bush clad valley. What is their secret? “We take our time, and we do it right.” And normally
delivered the next day after roasting!
Pick up some LaLa roast when on the Coromandel Peninsula or stop in these spots for a
great LaLa, brewed.

Tairua Butchery’s Shona Douglas, Arthur
Olsen, and butcher/owner Brett Collins are

their manuka smoked streaky bacon. The

The Landing Café
in Whitianga, is just a
stroll to or from the ferry and right next to
the Museum. Drink in that lovely view across
the river to Ferry Landing, or find a cosy spot
inside. After Phil makes you a great Coffee
LaLa, chow down on one of Jill’s famous
freshly made muffins or her great ‘Eggs Bene’
with bacon or salmon. Some days you might
find those delightfully delicious & somewhat
dangerous new treats: a ‘cro-nut’, a cross
between a croissant and a donut.
With cheery
banter provided
by pizza chef
Christian,
aka Luigi, at
Luke’s Kitchen
and a magnificent sunset
over Kuaotunu beach for viewing pleasure,
neither lunch nor dinner come better than
this! There are some great new additions
to the pizza selection including a fresh fish
pizza and, the most reliable options like Lil’
Hippy & Blackjack. All come with fresh local
ingredients. Live music is often performed at
weekends especially in summer & there’s no
issues with inside-outside flow here.
