My usual city-girl footwear is more likely to
be pink Isabella Anselmi sling-backs in the
summer or black suede Paula Ryan boots
in the winter.
But on the 1st of November that’s all going
to change. I’m going to be living on Slipper
Island – that stunning little gem, lying 8km
off the coast of Pauanui. I’m guessing that
gumboots, jandals and crocs might be my
more usual attire on an island named after
and shaped like an item of footwear!!
I stepped ashore for my inaugural
rendezvous with the owners on a grey,
windy September morning and my heart
skipped a beat. The sand on the beach is
the same soft pink as the aforementioned
sling-backs! What are the odds?!
GUMBOOTS plus
JANDALS = SLIPPER
Riley, the old family retainer greeted me
at the homestead with his brown eyes
sparkling, his tongue hanging out and his
rear end wriggling with excitement - just as
well, he’s an elderly Cavalier King Charles
spaniel.
So my adventure begins ... cleaning the
resort chalets and lodge, gardening,
welcoming guests and visitors, writing my
book, fishing, and promoting Slipper Island
to all and sundry.
I might even slip on a pair of fancy shoes
now and then if I’m feeling nostalgic about
city life. At least the stiletto heels will dig in
and stabilise me when I climb up the hill in
Home Bay for a better view of Mount Paku
and the mainland...
