Mercury Bay headed into its game with Whangamata as the only
unbeaten team in all Thames Valley grades this year. The Bay team
posted 30 points against Whangamata in both of this year’s games, but
the Whangamata proved victorious in the hard fought final. Both clubs
celebrated jubilees this year: Whangamata 50 years and Mercury Bay 125
years, something that was not be lost on the teams and their supporters.
MERCURY BAY CELEBRATES ITS 125TH
The Mercury Bay Sports and Rugby Club celebrated its 125th anniversary
in mid June. The club, with field and clubhouse located on Lyons street
in Whitianga, is an umbrella for three groups of players: Junior Rugby for
children from four and a half up to 4th grade, Secondary School Rugby
with a 5th grade, and First XV school team and Seniors B Rugby
adult team.
The Club celebrated its jubilee with games Friday night and all day
Saturday. Matches were played by grades 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9, with the
Mercury Bay Area School Senior team First XV losing against Waihi
College (7-19) and then a win for Senior B men over Ngatea (44-7). An
estimated 200 enthusiastic spectators, including former players (some
from overseas), cheered on the players.
Friday night featured a meet and greet where old players could reconnect
and swap stories. Saturday evening’s anniversary celebration was well
attended by about 150 people.

The first thing that comes to mind when asked to write the Tairua
rugby recap is the soul crushing feeling I experienced when I heard the
final whistle. l was hugely gutted. But at the same time, proud: Tairua
had made the final in our 125th Jubilee year. And it was all to play out
perfectly, we were going to win!
Hauraki North, had been fighting amongst themselves. They had key
players out and narrowly escaped with a win in their second semi-
final, and we beat them convincingly in our previous two encounters.
Meanwhile, our two weeks off allowed injuries to heal. We had some
really tip top trainings, and we had a full strength squad. The stars were
lining up, the ducks were about to walk in a row, and I was to have my
first beer in 2-and-a-half years. Then, even ahead at the half, we got
beaten.
The really cool thing about being apart of the Tairua rugby team this year
is that we had a strong sense of unity. We felt really close, like brothers,
and when we clicked we were unstoppable. The other cool thing was
that we stirred something up in the community: we won games, and we
were glowing as a team which strengthened and unified the community.
