COROMANDEL LIFE
SPRING 2013
GOT SAND??
TAIRUA MARINA
PROJECT TAKING SHAPE
The Tairua Marina Project in the harbour at the
base of Paku Mountain, is developing steadily
in low profile mode, literally sub sea level, with
the dredging of sand to create the channel and
accommodate the project’s 95 berth marina.
Laurence (Laurie) Flynn, Property Developer
Manager with the Watts Group, gave us an
update on the project which answers some of
the questions we’ve heard around town.
Currently, work on the construction of the
inner and outer sheet pile walls is progressing,
with the dredging of sand from the interior, the
marina basin, to start soon. “We will not be
dredging the bar as our consents do not cover
this,” Laurie says. “It’s condition will continue to
be dictated by natural forces”.
Removed sand, if very clean, is transported
to Tairua Harbour beaches as ‘beach
nourishment’. If the sand has some mud, it’s
trucked to the Tairua Country Club golf course,
helping to raise the level of those fairways that
tend to be waterlogged in winter months. This
should make the course playable year round.
Marina construction is running a bit behind
schedule, with likely completion early February
2014. Villa construction will not begin while
the marina is still under construction, as “that
space is needed for heavy machinery, truck
access, and supplies”. He adds, “We also need
to reach a certain level of [villa] presales, which
we will hopefully achieve this summer.”
What will this private marina mean for public
access to the launch and the waters
themselves? “There will be little change to the
existing beach launching off The Esplanade,”
Laurie explains, “and most will find
improvements [especially] during low tides, due

to the deeper channel.” The old pier will be
replaced by a new jetty which will be available
for ‘boaties’ to tie up for short periods and will
still be able to buy petrol and marine diesel.
As for parking, the existing road side trailer
parking will continue as it does now and
Council may open up part of the new reserve
being created for trailer parking during busy
summer times.
The existing swimming beach will remain
untouched other than receiving some sand in
the future, as it is one of the possible ‘beach
nourishment’ locations. One can still swim in
the existing channel, although it will be wider,
deeper, (1.3 metres at low tide), and a little
further out from the shore.
