SPRING 2013
Support the supporters!
The businesses and individuals advertising in Coromandel Life are
participating not only to promote their businesses, but to support our community magazine – so be sure to
tell them you saw them in Coromandel Life. Thanks to all of them for making the magazine possible!
We encourage you to get involved -
as advertisers, contributors, writers or artists. Email us with your
ideas. We want this to be a group project we can all be proud of - for the community, from the community.

COROMANDEL LIFE has life
Spring is the perfect time for us to be
bursting forth with our new expanded
version of
PakuViews.
You’ll have noticed
that we have chosen a new name:
Coromandel LIFE.
This reflects our mission
to celebrate ‘life’ on the Coromandel.
After all, it is the lifestyle that attracts
most people to our awesome region. We
now cover the entire east coast – from
Whangamata to Matarangi. We plan to
include the entire peninsula within the year.
Our aim is to create a publication that
celebrates the people and places here,
bringing a cohesiveness to our unique
communities here. As we now write about
the entire area, we’ve doubled our page
count as well as our print run to cope with
the extra demand for more copies – growing
as promised!
We are pleased to start our
Coromandel
Road Trip
series in this issue and hope you’ll
find somewhere new, or old, to rediscover
and appreciate with fresh eyes. The guide
features the delightful art and musings of
Charlotte Giblin.
What better way to reinforce all that’s good
about the Coromandel, and remind those of
us that live here not to overlook the beauty
waiting to be enjoyed right in our backyard.
We recommend carefully removing the
guide from the magazine and keep handy.
As we started researching the honey bee
we realised what a fascinating topic it is
and plan to continue the ‘bee story’ and its
plight on the world stage. We love sharing
interesting topics like we included this time
– Coromandel weddings, personality profiles
of lovable local characters (like the Pettitts
of Colenso p12), historical vignettes, art and
photography, festivals, rugbyrugbyrugby,
nature found above and below the sea,
and even one about the stars (we don’t
post there though)... and more of same

New Name, New Brand, New Bigger Size… Same Great Magazine!
fun articles from our new and used (I mean
usual) contributors.
As much as I love pulling this magazine
together, I must admit this one had some
big challenges. We optimistically didn’t plan
for the fact that doubling the pages not only
‘doubled the pleasure’, it also doubled the
burden and the time. We learnt that it’s time
to expand our support system, so if you,
or someone you know have an interest in
joining the team, especially in management,
sales or partnership, let’s talk.
We also realised how fortunate we are to
have the team we do. When our designer
of three years, Matt Hishon, was no longer
able to take on the entire responsibility,
Carol Wright, colleague and friend for
almost 30 years, really stepped up. She
came out of ‘designer’ retirement and did
her best to ‘channel’ Matt, wowing me with
some of her layouts. NZ designers Ange
Gregory (Firefly) and Emma Newell (An
Eye for Design) both came to the rescue,
bringing bold design ideas and strong
production skills with them. And Sandra
Scott, who joined the team early this year,
was there to assist production for us too.
Thanks to all!
Help us spread the word and be sure
to tell our advertisers you saw them in
Coromandel LIFE.
They make the magazine
possible so we want to keep them happy.
Support them, or better yet,
become
one.

ENGLISH: THE TRICKY LANGUAGE
ONE QUOTE OR TWO?
DECIDE ALREADY...
The English language is a minefield of seemingly
nonsensical rules and weird spelling that often
bears no resemblance to the spoken word. Pity
must be felt for anyone trying to grapple with it as
their second language!
At
Coromandel Life
we’re all English-speaking but
debates still rage about the ‘right way’ to write
things. Rife with cultural sayings, Kiwiana, and
historical references, Kiwi English baffles most
from other places and even many of us natives.
Publishers, Tovi and Greg, hail from the States
and they can easily relate to the plight of those for
whom NZ English isn’t so natural.
We won’t get it right (whatever that means) all
the time in the magazine, but we found a little
booklet that we have decided will be our ‘Bible’ for
punctuation and matters grammatical. It doesn’t
cover everything but does address the most
common errors made. It’s called ‘Punctuation
Basics’, which is in turn based on another helpful
book, ‘Write, Edit, Print’, (1997) both from Lincoln
University.
