Staff member Carol Wright was eating lunch at a patio table
of The Lakeside Cafe, enjoying the squabble of the birds
too accustomed to eating dropped bread crumbs.
She was taking video of them fighting over a hefty crust of
bread when a bird lover leaned over to help. She snatched
up the crust and broke it into pieces so all could share.
Carol noticed the back of her t-shirt, figuring she was a loon
lover, too. She took a photo of it and asked her what it was.
“Loon for all?” The congenial woman showed Carol the
front of her shirt and teased “guess?” And she did!
“You are the only one to know so far!” she said.
She introduced herself, Julie Amato, a professional jazz
singer and voice over talent. Her boyfriend got her the shirt
from the office. Can you guess the meaning of the t-shirt?

CAN YOU GUESS . . .
Winner Anne Fowler told us, “The photo is of
Laycock’s Hotel at Upper Landing in Hikuai.
Originally called Tairua Hotel it was built about
1885 and first run by Charles Winder. It was
situated about 200 metres below Prescott’s
Garage near McCall’s gate.
“The photo was probably taken about 1890.
The hotel had 24 rooms and 6 bars and was
a busy place for miners and bushmen on a
Saturday night.”
Our additional research of the early hotels
in our area, proved to be one of the more
complex histories we’ve uncovered, and the
more documents we unearthed, the more we
realized the very existence of these hotels had
all the makings of a movie, with perhaps a
few bodies unearthed if we dug long enough.
Although we could have filled an entire
magazine with the findings, we’ve included a
bit to share in the following pages.
