WWI Memorial

ANZAC Day Events

There will be no lack of events, ceremonies, TV specials and

parades this Centennial. Here are a few we found.

P

ublished December 2104, this book tells the stories of

soldiers from Thames and the Hauraki region who went

off to WWI. Their lives are honoured in this new 300-page

book,

From Gold Mine to Firing Line

(excerpts at right).

Thames researcher Althea Barker spearheaded the effort

with the assistance of other history buffs from The Treasury

(Coromandel Heritage Trust) – Meghan Hawkes, Kae Lewis,

David Wilton, Russell Skeet, Roger Strong, and Tracey Spence.

The illustrated book commemorates the people from the

Thames region who went to war, the families they left behind,

and in particular the servicemen who did not return.

A limited number of the first edition are available for sale at

$50 a copy from The Treasury bookshop and can be ordered

online. Email:

COROMANDEL LIFE 2015 LATE SUMMER/EASTER

TCDC is spearheading a project to commemorate all NZ soldiers who

died in WWI, commencing on ANZAC Day 2015. It will see a total of

18,166 trees planted at sites around the Coromandel. Each memorial

forest will commemorate a different battle or campaign during the war,

with five initially planned – one in each community board area.

As more sites become available, additional forests will be added to reach

the total number of trees. It’s envisioned that community groups and

schools will then adopt the sprouting forests, to both care for the trees,

and add plaques and other features of local significance.

Thames, Coromandel, Whitianga, Tairua-Pauanui, and Whangamata

will be allotted the first plots, with a ceremonial planting of two trees

on ANZAC Day. Community working bees will take place a month later.

The plantings will continue through to a ceremony in November 2018,

memorialising the end of the conflict.
