Excerpts Remember Gallipoli & the War...
Albert Brokenshire
From a letter dated Gallipoli 29/9/15, written by soldier Albert Brokenshire
(a plumber who worked for Battson’s in Thames) to his family:
“I am still kept going at the plumbing game here there seems to be
any amount of work wants doing. I have been laying 2 inch water
pipes to tanks and filling up pumps, repairing tanks, etc.
“It is much more interesting putting in pipes with a sniper having a
go at you than fixing them at home.
“When he gets too warm we just duck for cover, but I would like to
be able to have a cut at him.”
Mr. Phillips
Mr. Phillips’ war memories were recounted in the local paper on the
occasion of his sixtieth wedding anniversary in 1978. He was a member
of the 6th Hauraki Regiment at Gallipoli and also fought at the attack
on the Suez Canal. Phillips was one of the first to go ashore at Gallipoli
and was later shot and gassed. In the article, he recounted the day the
armistice was signed - when both the Turks and Allies had to bury their
dead on no-man’s land.
“We started at 7.30am and finished at 4.30pm. Then we went back
to the trenches and it was over.”
In 1965, Mr Phillips returned to Gallipoli for the 50th Anniversary of
the Gallipoli landing. He was the only member of the regiment from the
Thames area to make the pilgrimage back …”
