This life skills and values based programme,
developed by the Foundation for Youth
Development, is delivered to primary school
children throughout New Zealand.
The Coromandel Independent Living Trust
(CILT) is licenced to deliver the Kiwi Can
programme to three schools here on the
peninsula. “We have been in both Coromandel
Area School and Colville School for the past
ten years”, says CILT’s Kiwi Can Coordinator
Marlene Johnson, “and in 2013, we introduced
Thames South School to our Kiwi Can
programme”.
The programme has three trained, part time
leaders. Students experience Kiwi Can weekly,
where they are given a range of physical,
mental and creative challenges through high-
energy and interactive lessons reinforcing
cornerstone values.
The programme focuses on four major
themes, these being positive relationships /
whakawhanautanga
, integrity/
pono
, respect/
manaakitanga,
and resilience/
taikaha
. “We
cover one theme per term,” explains Marlene.
These themes encourage students to develop
positive social skills to build self confidence,
engages their motivation, and promotes a
positive outlook to the future. “We enable
students by giving them tools to resolve
conflict, take responsibilty and be accountable
for their actions. We promote pride and
respect for themselves as well as other people,
property and the community.”
These lessons have been shown to contribute
to greater communication skills, improved
social interactions, cooperation, and empathy.
“We are always seeking interested parties to
sponsor FYD Kiwi Can Coromandel,” adds
financial officer Joanne Scott. “Any donation,
no matter how small, will be invaluable in
continuing this worthwhile and much-loved
programme.”
Kiwi Can is just one of the socially responsible
programmes sponsored by the Coromandel
Independent Living Trust, CILT. One of their
projects was the restoration of the women’s
restroom (now the Info Centre) in Coromandel
Town at the Samuel James Reserve.
Managed by the CILT, Kiwi Can is officially
sponsored by SANFORD Ltd & supported by
The Lion Foundation, Grassroots Trust, Sky City
Community Trust, Thames Community Board and
Driving Creek Railway Ltd.
