“Here is Lisa and I sharing a few bubbles to
celebrate the new adventures we have both
begun,” says new salon owner Tanya White.
Previous owner Lisa Stevenson worked side
by side with Tanya before leaving Tairua to
join family and pursue new ventures in Perth.

S
tep through the doorway and feel your cares
melt away – flickering candles, the gentle
lapping of a fountain, heavenly aromas – a
haven of calm, hidden right in the centre of
Tairua. The refreshment corner offers Nespresso
coffee and minted lemon water to further
pamper arriving guests.
Walking into this lovely work environment is
Tanya White, new owner of Sea Escape Day
Spa. Tanya moved from Auckland this spring
with daughter Charlotte and hubby Shannon.
Straight out of high school, Tanya trained at the
Elite International School of Beauty Therapy in
Auckland, graduating in 2000, “having gained
both national and international qualifications.”
She then worked with salons in Ponsonby and
managed a salon on the Hibiscus Coast, where
she trained as a hair colour technician.
However, Tanya soon took a career detour,
joining the NZ
P
olice as a ‘non-sworn member’,
starting at the 111 call centre. “I enjoyed it
and gained a good understanding of the law
while fulfilling various roles with the police”,
recalls Tanya, “but I still kept up with my beauty
therapies and post-graduate training – learning
new techniques and following current trends
and products. I knew one day I’d be back.”
Body-hair-facial-massage treatments require
sanitary and safe procedures, so proper training
and certification is required. Initially self-taught
in nail care (acrylics and gel nails) Tanya then
took a course to learn the correct technique,
contraindications and proper hygiene “to
ensure I am providing the best and safest
service possible to my clients”. Bringing ‘law
and order’ to her beauty practice is paramount,
as she says “the nail industry is fairly lawless in
NZ and many working in the industry have little
or in some cases no training at all”.
Safety should be a given... but that’s not what
gets her revved up. “I’m a make-up and nail art
maniac”, she confesses. “I stalk the internet for
new ideas, tips and techniques.” She looks
forward to adding new treatments after getting
to know her clientele’s preferences.
Rounding out the Sea Escape staff are Glenys
Ardern and Celeste Knighton. “Glenys has been
in the hairdressing industry for 35 years,” says
Tanya, “and has dedicated the past couple of
years to training up and coming hairdressers at
Servilles Academy.
“She offers a wealth of knowledge, impeccable
cutting and colouring skills and provides the
best advice on the type of style and colour that
would best suit you. Glenys prides herself in
doing detailed consultations with every client
for each appointment – even kids!”
Celeste, also a graduate of the Elite
International School of Beauty Therapy,
specialises in spa treatments. Impressed with
her up-to-date knowledge and techniques
Tanya shares, “Celeste is all about relaxation,
and often her clients fall asleep during their
facials or massages.”
“We make a good balanced team and like to
have fun working together.” Please call in and
welcome them to the neighbourhood!
