COROMANDEL LIFE
SUMMER 2014
S
ummer is here
- the time of year everyone
looks forward to – and the Coromandel
is bursting at the seams with holidaymakers,
visitors and those of us lucky enough to
live here. Our population on the peninsula
leaps from 20,000 to 200,000 within days of
Christmas.
It’s a pleasure to share with you our
second issue of Coromandel Life (formerly
PakuViews). Your comments were great
inspiration – “Best one yet!” “Such a smart
read” “I always read it cover to cover and
often go back for more” “I save every issue”
“Customers walked in with issue in hand.”
However, as you can see below, we have ‘big
chairs to fill’ since expanding the magazine
to include the entire Coromandel. It’s a big
job and big area to cover and we are always
looking for help in various areas.
For one, be our ‘journalists at large’ – let us
know what’s happening in your areas and
who it’s happening to. Help us discover and
uncover the fascinating people and places of
our region. ‘Spread the word’ – find places
to distribute a stack of the magazines and
perhaps even help us place them there.
Tourists in our own backyard...
It’s always great to have visitors from
overseas; they give us an excuse to become
tourists and wander in our gorgeous
‘backyard’. Greg’s mum, Fern, did just that.
She’s come from America for a few months,
prying us loose from our computer screens
and into the marvels of the Coromandel. And,
once we get this issue to press, we plan to do
much more!
Needing photos for the new Road Trip section,
we took Mum, who loves taking photos, to
explore the locations artist Charlotte Giblin
takes us on with her illustrations and poetic
musings on ‘Road Trip 2’. Through
Charlotte’s and Mum’s eyes, we discovered
how much the Whitianga area really does
have to offer. (You might want to remove it
from the the center of the magazine and
keep in your car for reference.)
How our stories grow...
It’s always humourous to watch our stories
evolve. Carol Wright, our ‘jack of all trades’
here at
Coromandel Life
, asked me, “Why
Buffalo Beach – What does NZ have to
do with buffalo?” I hadn’t really given it a
thought. We investigated, and the history of
the HMS
Buffalo
unfolded, complete with a
ballad that tells the Kiwi life of those early
sailors (see page 12).
Another historical tidbit I stumbled on was
about a character from Hahei named Robert
Wigmore who got into a grump and ventured
out to shoot a marauding cow. The gun went
off and it was Wigmore found dead, not the
cow. Well, that grew from a sidebar to a four
page story.
Some teachers shared that they used
the Honey Bee article in the last issue as
classroom reading, and look forward to
seeing the rest of the series. We are pleased
with this outreach and hope they include a
shark lesson from this issue as well.
Even our school pages had some dramatic
news, as the Mercury Bay Area School
students completed assembly of a two
seater aeroplane – with the assistance of
mentors from the aero club.
I am impressed with all the people openly
sharing books, stories, old and new
photographs and priceless information. Both
the Mercury Bay Museum and The Treasury
in Thames have been very helpful.
We look forward to bringing you more of
‘your Coromandel Life’ in the Autumn issue.
