ISSUE 4 AUTUMN/WINTER 2012
On Thursday last week Room 4 held a crazy Hair
Day to raise funds for a kayaking trip to Cathedral
Cove. Many of the children had put a lot of effort
into creating weird and wonderful hair styles and for
a gold coin donation went into the draw for prizes,
many of them donated by Tairua Pharmacy.
After a couple of attempts to run our surf academy, last
Friday evening provided us with the perfect opportunity
to get our surfers in the water. Light winds, sunshine,
small rideable waves and an enthusiastic bunch of
surfers, set the scene for a brilliant evening of surfing.
This year’s programme follows a simple structure with
three groups. Senior surfers, intermediate surfers and
boogie boarders. Every lesson begins with a reminder of
safety procedures, followed by a warm-up, explicit goals
for the session, practice time, debrief and rounded off
with a sharing of successes. Our surf academy is unique
to our school, being possibly the only primary school to
offer such a programme.

ABOVE: Artist Paula McNeil challenged the staff to create self
portraits at a recent staff development session, and you can
see the bold results. Pictured L-R: Carin Hetherington, Nel
Bracegirdle ,Catherine Browning, Samantha Telfer, Brendan Finn,
Emily Ratcliff. (Hazel Shepherd, Jane Land and Joan Boeglin,
absent from photo).
ABOVE RIGHT: Room 1 initially painted these beautiful creations
with the theme “One of Me.” Yes, every one is unique and
resemble the painters remarkably well.
RIGHT: Room 4 have been creating self portraits focusing on
proportion, facial features, detail and shading and how these
things can enhance our self portrait art work.
The staff are undertaking two professional
development sessions with local artist Paula McNeil,
developing the skills to guide their classes in portrait
painting.
Each class had previously drawn or painted self
portraits (see photos).
The teachers will now bring their new found
knowledge to the classrooms to share with the
students who will again paint their self portraits. It
will be exciting to view the results.
