A Fun & Friendly Place to Be
Tairua & Pauanui Information Centres:
Serving more than just our Visitors
We know that thousands of people from all over of the
world call in to our Tairua and Pauanui Information
Centres for advice on fun things to do in our area, but
did you realise that both Centres provide many great
services for the local community as well?
In addition to supporting local businesses and
accommodation providers by encouraging visitors to stay
and use local services, the information centres are also
a one-stop-shop for many community needs. Pop in for
your copy of PakuViews, past and current, as well as a
great selection of hiking guides, brochures, maps and
travel guides filled with valuable info whether you live
here or not. And both are open 364 days of the year!
Lynette Dey and her team in Tairua
The centre is the first port of call for information on
TCDC meetings, services and policies; numbers of local
tradespeople; and buying tickets to local shows and
events. Lynette adds, “It’s also the first place people think
to ring when they want to know things like: What time
does the rubbish dump open? What roads are closed by
floods? Or is the Tairua/Pauanui ferry still running?”
One popular corner of the Centre is dedicated to
information on tracks and campsites maintained by the
DoC as well as the work of volunteers with Kauri 2000.
“Be sure to see the display case by ‘The Whenuakite Kiwi
Care Group’”, says Lynette. “You can see a kiwi, its egg,
and its predators and learn how to protect the birds while
in the area.”
The Centre is also heavily involved in co-ordinating and
raising money for key local events such as Brits at the
Beach slated for 5-7 October, Santa on the Pepe, and the
famous Mud, Splash and Dash. You’ll find the Centre’s
helping hand at other competitions organised every
summer to amuse both young and not-so-young.
“The Centre’s committee is always looking for other
activities which can help to put Tairua on the map as a
great place to stay”, invites Lynette, “So if you have any
ideas don’t hesitate to pop in”. You never know what you
might learn while you are there!
Jewel Hughes and her team in Pauanui
“We focus on being able to support all groups,
organisations and businesses in the community by
promoting whatever it is that may be going on”, says
Jewel. “We are fortunate in being given complimentary
community radio spots from Kool FM, CFM, and The
Breeze to assist in our efforts”.
Like Tairua, Jewel says their phone rings with queries
about transportation, ferry schedules, government
services, business, cultural events, sports and
celebrations. “We encourage and welcome all non-profit
groups to advise us of anything they are doing so that we
can assist in exposure for their events”.
The Pauanui Business Association (which is the
Committee for the Centre) has recently been very active
with the March weekend series which included the
Storms Contracting Trolley Derby and the Music Picnic
at the Point. “Both were great crowd pleasers,” smiles
Jewel, “and lots of fun”.
The Stand Up Paddle Board Challenge from Pauanui
around Shoe Island on 7th April is another event on offer
as a community activity. “We will also work with Tairua
Information Centre in assisting where possible with Brits
at the Beach”.
To assist with time and/or manpower, for these events,
ring the Centre or Paul on 0274 988 056.
The value of our Tairua and Pauanui Information
Centres to the communities is priceless. So let’s
help our Centres in return.
