PakuViews Contest Winners Carol Laycock and Clem & Delrae McCall are presented
with $50 vouchers by Erin Adam (center), owner of Tairua 4 Square. They were the only
correct answers we received and rather than draw between the two, a generous Erin agreed
to give them both winning vouchers.
Clem’s father just happened to be chairman of the Butter Factory and he
provided this brief description for us. “The photo is of the Tairua Butter
Factory by the Tairua wharf. The factory was built in 1922 at a cost of 4,800
pounds and closed down in 1949 when amalgamated with the Mercury
Bay Co-op. The factory was built to process the cream produced by soldier
settlers farming in Hikuai. Prior to this the cream was sent to Auckland once
weekly to be processed there”. The photo was taken in 1928.
