O
ne of the blessings of publishing PakuViews
is the discovery of information we would
not have otherwise known existed.
I am always
in awe of the syncronicity that takes place with the
creation of each issue. One connection leads to
another which leads to another... For example,
the fantail.
I’ve always loved the cleverness of Airdrie
Hamilton’s cover art, “Fantail on a Fanta Bottle”.
Using it on the cover provided the chance to get to
know Airdrie with her fascination for the fantail and
the lovely way she portrays them. Such a wonderful
reminder it was of my magical visits to NZ,
especially my first fantail encounter (see page 6).
The cover art gave us an excuse to share more
about this endearing native bird in a feature article.
The short “nature” article sprouted over the weeks
to a multi-themed 4-pager!
Researching the myths and legends inspired me to
ring Maori elder Moana Jones to ask what she knew
of this special bird—only to find that it was her
kaitiaki, or family guardian. Moana’s mention of King
Tawhiao led me to find a bit more interesting history
of this peace loving king who brought an end to war.
On a separate tack, I recalled a fantail photograph
I had seen on the internet. It was perfect for the
feature, so I decided to see if I could find the
photographer and take a chance we might get
permission to use it. I remember thinking, how did
someone capture this quick moving bird in such a
dear pose—the eyes, the whiskers, the tail in a full
fan, like a peacock.
That led me to Mandy Hague. Not only was she a
talented photographer, but a gifted artist as well. So
now our little article would be enriched by both her
artwork and photograph. She was kind enough to
share the symbology, the stories and feelings behind
these works as well.
All of this through a little bird! My mother used to
say when I’d ask how she knew, that “a little birdie
told me”. Well this little birdie told me a lot these
past weeks, and I will be forever grateful.
All stories have this sprouting quality. A chance
conversation with Tracey at Shine led me to the
talented Kade Cory-Wright, thus fulfilling a desire
to work with a local student. He shared a delightful
story of his granddad which we were thrilled to
publish in this issue (see p14-15).
Too many to mention—these synchronicities and
connections—but you get the drift. Dreams and
desires do come true if we just let them. Sometimes
it just takes staying out of your own way—being
open and paying attention. And sometimes taking a
bit of a risk.
Believe me, this magazine is alive in the community
before we even go to press.
See you in the Spring.
Kindest regards—Tovi (& Greg) Daly
