It’s all happening at the zoo...
Rooms 1 and 2 travelled to Auckland Zoo as part of their study of animals, their
habitats, and how the zoo cared for the animals. Classification-and-comparison were
“thinking skills” the children also practiced. These excursions and the camps are
made possible by parents willing to drive and help supervise the students. Their help
is much appreciated by all.
Matariki Celebrations
Tairua School’s parent whanau group and teachers created a programme that
provided the children with meaningful experiences to celebrate Matariki. Students
took part in flax weaving, bread making, making poi and flying kites. A highlight was
learning and performing their very own school haka and waiata, developed by Ian
Kaka. Parents helped senior students prepare a hangi which was enjoyed by all who
joined us at school for a shared lunch.
Future Web Wizards
Tairua School was one of a handful of organisations awarded funding by the New
Zealand Global Focus Fund which aims to promote global education among New
Zealanders. Awarded $6800 to purchase new laptops, students will design, develop
and market a new website linking Tairua School with other global learners across New
Zealand and the world. Mark Hemmings from
Websites with Zing
works with student
leaders to develop the site. The concept of the “Tairua Global Citizen” was introduced
two years ago, and the website is slated to go online soon.

School Production of ‘Reset’
A party in a haunted house unexpectedly leads a
group of teenagers into a time travel portal that
takes them back to Germany, 1922. At first it
seems an exciting adventure, but before too long
the group is placed in situations where they are
conflicted over whether to take the opportunity to
change history.
The cast and crew transformed the main floor of
the hall into the stage where the actors performed
with multiple sets (moving walls and all) while the
audience sat in tiers on the actual stage.
Tairua’s Kade Cory-Wright was among the 65
talented students that performed in this clever
production that ran 31st July through 4th August.
Reset was written and directed by Head of the
Drama Dept, Kristina Walton. Well done all!
Celebrating the Olympics, students and their families gathered on the reserve for
the annual Cross Country Races. Children competed in their age groups, with age
appropriate race distances. Senior students raced to the playground and back. Great
fun was had by all, and medals were presented at an Olympics style ceremony.
