PHOTO OF BEACH BACKGROUND BY ANGE GREGORY
A scenic standout of Mercury Bay is
Shakespeare Cliff Scenic &
Historic Reserve,
accessed off Purangi Road. A road leads to a scenic
viewing platform at the tip, and a carpark near the walking path to the
secluded, shell-studded, Lonely Bay beach at the cliff’s east edge. (See
painting previous page). Be wary of rip tides if going in the water.
Driving west toward Ferry Landing, you’ll pass Flaxmill Bay with its
cosy sheltered beach (see photo above). Further west, partially hidden
from the main road and framed by beautiful Pohutukawa trees is the
longer Front Beach. More surf and chance of undertow here so not the
best for littlies except on a calm day.
You’ll find quaint cafes and a wide choice of accommodation in the
area. Catch the walk-on ferry to Whitianga (a new larger boat was
added recently). You may notice restoration work being done on
the historic stone wharf nearby, thought to be the oldest wharf still
in use in NZ. Built in 1838, Sydney timber merchant Gordon Davis
Brown is credited with the design and install, aided by local Maori
whose handiwork was so fine that no mortar was used in cementing
the stones together (though mortar was used on subsequent additions
and repairs). A kauri sawmill
operated there from 1863-81.
In Whitianga find a vari ty
of parks, stores, cafes,
tour boats, bike hires, dive
charters, art galleries and the
Mercury Bay Museum – all
within walking distance.
Jane Galloway
enjoys
painting the charm of the
area’s beaches including
Front Beach
at right.
