Coromandel Life - Road Trip Summer 2014 - page 10

Buffalo Beach near Bruce Street grass parking area
Walking back into town, this is my favourite stretch of Buffalo
Beach, with the layers of different texture and colour, and the
Norfolk Pine silhouetted against the blue sky. This is also the
widest area of grass with a large space for cars to park, and I
have often seen kite-boarders using the expanse of field and
off-shore breeze to hone their skills. Many people park here to
watch the waves and inhale the fresh ocean air, and you can see
families bundle out of their cars with boogie-boards, buckets and spades
ready to enjoy the beach.
Along the side of the dune there have been many re-planting schemes,
and I feel such a sense of pride in the community as I admire their
efforts.. I’d been out for a few hours and was dreaming of what kind
of slice I was going to have with my large flat white when I got back
to town.

Buffalo Beach, the twin Norfolks at Halligan Rd.
This painting brings back so many wonderful memories. It
was New Year’s Day, and the weather was picture-
perfect . . . not too hot with a cool breeze that gently
swayed the Norfolk pine branches behind me. Pete was
working hard in the restaurant so I had a quiet day to
myself and really enjoyed seeing the happy family groups
out on the beach and splashing about in the ocean.
There was a cluster of sailing boats out in the bay, and I
found it immensely relaxing to sit on the edge of the grass
bank, legs dangling towards the sand to watch the white
sails gracefully billow and glide across the surface of the
water. There was a couple sat near me on a blanket with
a picnic, boogie-boards at the ready . . . everyone seemed
in such a great mood and a sense of good-will emanated
from the ground up!
Thank you for joining us
on our second in a series of Road Trips around the Coromandel.
While creating the section, Charlotte’s drawings and poetic musings have drawn us north
from Tairua, and inspired us to park and enjoy (and photograph) the scenes through her
eyes. In the upcoming issues we will be touring south along the coast to Whangamata
and also explore north of Whitianga toward Coromandel Town. Charlotte will, of course be
sharing the trip with us again as our poetic artist and tour guide.
