Coromandel Life - Road Trip Summer 2014 - page 5

The Trees along Whitianga Harbour
I was introduced to another wonderful stretch of Reserve
when I moved to Whitianga, which curves around the south
east edge of the Harbour, and I often walk around here to get
away from the hubbub in town. It’s an easy wander from the
centre: when Albert Street meets the South Highway /Robinson
Road junction, hug the coast and continue on Robinson Road, past the
boat ramp and soon the Reserve opens up with a path snaking off
into the trees.
There’s an impressive rope swing which children are often seen using,
squealing with delight as they swoop from left to right. At high tide,
the water fills the Harbour and there are so many idyllic spots to sit
and peer through the boughs of the many Pohutukawa and other
native species.
Under the twisted limbs in the dappled sun, I watched the tidal waters
and let my mind wander. I just love the way the bright sun filters
through trees, creating enchanting and complex patterns of dappled
light against the dark shadows defined by the dense leafy boughs. The
old, gnarledlimbs of my favourite trees give them so much personality
and character, as if they have “been around and seen it all” and have
many a tale to tell. The branches twist and weave around themselves,
wrapping around their own trunk: it looks like they are giving
themselves a comforting hug after weathering so many storms and
watching so much evolve around them. Sitting on this serene bench, I
couldn’t help thinking to myself “if only this tree could talk”.
