Anne Johnston, an avid gardener
and previous committee member, started the
original cottage garden under the 150 year
old oak tree. Unable to continue due to a lack
of money, she invited people to buy a rose in
honour of a past family member. Anne planted
the roses and placed the ‘in memorium’
plaques her husband made for each person.
Thus the ‘Garden of Memories’ (
above)
was
born. Last year they moved all the roses to the
lawn near the summer house for more direct sun
where they are now thriving.

One may be tempted to volunteer, from
a bit of time helping with the garden, or
contributing to larger projects: donations,
fundraising, historical research, tour
guides, etc.
Visiting gardeners may want to volunteer
in the gardens or donate suitable plant
cuttings or seedlings. Read here about the
many varieties of plants in the Athenree
orchards and Adela’s garden:

Some original trees have survived and their fruit
is now used for jams and preserves sold at the
Homestead using Adela’s own recipes.
Handy in the kitchen?
Volunteers are needed here too!
V
isiting the Athenree Homestead on a sunny Sunday morning on the brink of summer,
it’s easy to see why so many supporters of this heritage site have invested both time
and money into the house and surrounding gardens. Every corner gleams from the loving
attendance of volunteers from over a decade of restoration and maintenance. Tended gardens,
homemade marmalade, polished kauri timber floors and ceilings, hand crafted furnishings,
donated paintings and photographs, and an impressive collection of vintage clothing.
