The Thames School of Mines offers daily workshops (some for children) centered
around heritage art, paint mixing, gold panning, museum tours and their mineral
rock exhibition.
Though Thames boasts many historic building ‘saves’ through the decades –
be sure to see the new exhibit room at the Historical Museum showcasing Ted
Egan’s wooden models of Thames historic buildings – the fight for structure
preservation continues. High on the list to demolish is the Kopu Swinging Bridge,
so experience it before it disappears. On Sunday, 13 March (9:30am – noon),
take a walking tour and watch as the bridge is swung open and closed. This is
just one of many history/nature walks planned for the festival.
YOUR CHANCE TO STEP BACK IN TIME!
Period costumes are central to many of the week’s events, especially the
week’s capstones – the March 12
Heritage Fashion Day
and
Vintage & Classic
Car Show
in Victoria Park and the
Victorian Fete
on March 19 at the Thames
Historical Museum.
Two period-dress sporting events are scheduled March 12, a tennis match (with
vintage attire and rackets) and the
Croquet and Devonshire Tea
at the Croquet
Club, both at Victoria Park. Need help creating a costume? Check out the
Mad
Hatters Workshops.
There is a way for all to participate: watch the parade (or be in it...decorate
your bike!), attend lectures, visit museums, take a workshop, go all-out with the
Surf2Firth marathon, or barrel down the hill at the Totally Thames Trolley Derby.
Check out the Heritage Week website for current events list and daily schedule (see
left)...or add an event of your own!
