T

he train from the Waikino station (you can bring your bike) will

take you to Goldfields Railway Station on Wrigley St in Waihi.

See historic buildings, old trains and sheltered restoration areas.

Historically, Waihi’s railway station really hummed, with pull-off tracks

to accommodate 97 wagons in 1907, growing to a yard capacity of

214 in 1952.

If riding your bicycle

from Waikino, the

Hauraki Rail Trail track

continues east along

the Ohinemuri River and

then over a meandering

trail, ending at the

award winning Gold

Discovery Centre (Waihi

iSITE), which houses an

impressive interactive

museum exhibit about

the enormous Martha Pit

Mine. Check website for

tour prices.

This vast pit is now rimmed by the Pit Rim Walkway which begins

at the Cornish Pumphouse. Interpretative signs give interesting

facts about the spectacular Martha Mine as you complete the

4km loop.
