WHY
DO
Gone daffy to support
Cancer Society
Daffodil ladies Diana Avery and Celia Morrison (pictured)
cheered up the bake sale table on Daffodil Day, 31
August. Almost $4000 will benefit the Cancer Society and
the local Tairua Pauanui Care and Cancer Support Group.
Spokesperson Betty Oudney said the group was thrilled
with the level of support. “What a great effort on such a
beautiful day”. A big thanks goes to all the people that
contributed jams, baked goods and other items for sale
and auction, as well as the sales volunteers and everyone
else in town that purchased!
Tie in to the Tairua Business Network
Donna Brooke with August host Karen O’Reilly
of Tairua Coastal Lodge
Over 30 members convened at Tairua Coastal Lodge
in August for a bit of food, a bit of drink and a lot of
“networking”, followed by a short informative talk by
Hadley Dryden of Destination Coromandel. Initiated
by Donna Brooke, the group meets each month at a
different business venue.
“It’s fun and free to attend–just bring along a bottle of
your favourite beverage and business cards,” explains
Donna, whose Sunlover Retreat was finished just
this June and is now open for business. “We hope
to relocate to Tairua full time and I wanted a way to
informally meet the other business owners in town”.

Over 400 gathered at Pauanui Centre, 2nd June for
the unveiling of this unique sculpture honouring the
Hopper brothers (Tony, Ian, and Guy) plus surveyor
Frank Easdale for their vision and contributions to the
development of Pauanui seaside resort. Each side
features bronze casts of each man’s hands.
A small group of property owners conceived the
idea three years ago and, thanks to the dedicated
efforts of Shirley Peacock, Margaret McDougall and
their committee, it became a reality. These works of
art were sculpted by Nathan Whitehead of Sculpted
Metals Ltd, Thames.
The development of Pauanui commenced in 1968,
and included unique street environments, recognised
landscape features, meandering parks and pedestrian
walkways plus dual carriage roadways, and open
reserves. And all this remains today–44 years on–for
locals and visitors to enjoy.
