STUDIO HIGHLIGHTS
BY CHARLOTTE GIBLIN
Hahei area studios
I love both my studio visits to new Art Escape members and the follow-up
visits a year later, to see how the artist has developed and what direction they
have taken their skill.
Christine Bannan
was one such new member in 2013
and had settled nicely into her cosy new downstairs studio on Grange Road
when I came along in March.
Christine welcomed the steady stream of visitors so warmly people were
compelled to linger and chat, to hear about the influence and thought behind
the works hanging on the wooden walls. It is this personal touch and first-
hand conversation with the artists that makes Art Escape such a precious
event, and I really enjoyed over-hearing stories while absorbed in her artwork.
One of my favourite pieces from the whole of the 2013 Art Escape was
Christine’s ‘Grey Wolf’, an intricately detailed work painted meticulously using
wax pastels with each hair in the Wolf’s fur visible – the animal was so filled
with life (see below).
In the immediate vicinity of Christine’s studio is
Meg Auth
’s workshop
showcasing her beautiful silver jewellery alongside
Verena Tagmann
’s bold
and wonderful mixed media works, plus
Betty Collings’
amazing and varied
ceramic artworks…creating a fascinating “trio of studios” which are an
absolute treat (artwork shown below).
GUITY EVELYN
View fine art by renowned contemporary French/New Zealand
painter Guity Evelyn at the artist’s home/studio overlooking unspoilt
Opoutere Beach and Wharekawa Harbour.
Guity’s unique art and distinctive style exude the beauty of
The Coromandel tinged with hints of Provence and the Cote d’ Azur,
from where she originates. These contrasting reflections of where
the Pacific meets the Mediterranean express a character all their own.
Guity’s boldness of colour and an affinity for both
the figurative and abstract have made her art
sought by national and international collectors.

“...Guity’s canvas surfaces defy optical logic, playing tricks with their depth
with their shifting patterns and melting colours ... They strike a chord with
people from all over the world, many of whom come back to collect more of
Guity’s art. Visitors at Topadahil Studios watching
the changing colours of the sea and the movement
of light across the sky, understand...”
