COROMANDEL LIFE
SUMMER 2014
Long, lazy, hot summer days are with us at
the moment and what better way to enjoy
leisurely lunchtimes and balmy evenings with
good friends and great wine?
Cuisine
magazine recognises this, which is why
at Golddiggers Tairua we are featuring some
of their current recommendations of top notch
Sauvignon Blancs and easy to enjoy Rosés!
Both these wine varieties scream summertime
enjoyment. Chilled Savs with great acid
lines and softer, easier drinking style Rosés
are tailor made for the food that most of us
have been enjoying this summer. Fresh fish,
shellfish, salads, cold meats, antipasto platters
are all great food to be matched with these
two summertime beauties.
Our top featured Savs both hail from
Marlborough, which should come as
no surprise.
Mt Vernon
offers floral
scents with fruit flavours of apples,
passionfruit and honeydew melon.
Try it alongside a Salmon quiche ...
perfect!
Talented winemaker
Jules
Taylor
has the other 5 star
awarded Sav Blanc on
our stand. She describes
the 2012/2013 growing season
as ‘perfect’ which has resulted
in her Sav showing aromas
of fruit salad, passionfruit,
nectarine with underlying notes
of jalapeno peppers and vine
ripened tomato stalks. On the
palate, plenty of juicy acidity
features with tropical flavours of passionfruit,
lychees and restrained herbaceous notes.
Perennial Marlborough favourites,
The Ned
and
Two Tracks
are rated as
Cuisine’
s best buys, but
in my opinion, the must try Sav is from
Steve
Bird
(he also does a stunning Pinot Noir and
Pinot Gris!), you won’t be disappointed in this 4
star rated wine – taste and budget wise.
At long last, Kiwis have caught up with the rest
of the world in enjoying and understanding
what Rosé wines bring to the table. Our top
rated Rosé is from
Central Otagos Terra Sancta
Estate
. This little gem is made entirely from Pinot
Noir and as such, offers a perfume of fresh
cut flowers with flavours of wild strawberries
which grow in the mouth.
Clearview Estate
in Hawkes Bay has a proud
tradition with their Black Reef Blush Rosé made
from Bordeaux varieties and Chambourcin
grapes. This is a delightful fruity, dry Rosé style
enhanced with hints of berryfruit and spicy
melon. Perfect as an aperitif, matched with fresh
summer fruits, salmon, turkey and ham.
My suggestion? Hop in to Golddiggers Tairua
and visit the Cuisine stand, buy one (or two) of
the top rated wines before summer gets away
on you!
Tairua Wine Club starts its new year off on
February 28 with wines from Marlborough’s St
Clair winery. We will be tasting their Pioneer
Block range, with the Gruner Veltliner I’m picking
as the star of the show! Interested in joining us?
