SLEEMAN’S PARK ON VICTORIA STREET
Some friends asked me to meet them for a picnic in Sleeman’s Park, and despite
having lived in Whitianga a few months, I had to look on a map! It’s an oasis
of calm just a side-step from the main shopping street.
Even on a rainy day you can be sheltered under the stately trees twisting from
the ground; the views across the marina are both impressive (with the sprawl
of boats and rows of masts pricking the air) and relaxing. There are benches
and picnic tables, and dog-walkers go there for some leg-stretching. Café Nina
is just a short distance, and many times I’ve taken my large flat white and a
delectable slice of carrot cake to enjoy in the peace of Sleeman’s Park.
At the block-long park,
enjoy the vista of the
marina and passing boats.
Benches and picnic tables
are available and a small
rope swing for the kids.
