EVENT DESCRIPTIONS
GECKO ENCOUNTER.
Doug Ashby knows all about
the quirky fascinating secrets of our native geckos and
lizards. Come have an up close encounter. 11am start.
MOA MONSTERS.
A thousand years ago giant flightless
birds called Moa roamed the islands. The largest stood
2-3 metres high. See a real Moa skeleton. 1pm start.
BUSH CRAFT.
Learn about survival in the bush. How to
judge the river & make a safe crossing. 11am start
LET’S TALK KIWIS.
Kiwis have more than meets the
eye. They have many weird and wonderful features that
have developed over millions of years. 11am start.
BUSH TREASURE HUNT.
Fun for the little kids. Find
hidden treasures with our DOC ranger. Make a badge
with your favourite native bird. 1pm start.
TRAP HOUND.
Walk a working trap line with a DOC
ranger. Learn about animal pest control methods. Min.
age 10 years.
ALL ABOUT BIRDS.
Take a wander through nature with
a DOC Ranger for a talk about birds on the Coromandel.
Find out how to do a 5 min bird count.1pm start
TWILIGHT WALK.
Join us at Jasper Creek for a walk.
See the glow worms and other natives that come out at
night. A torch and sturdy footwear are essential. Meet at
Hotoritori Campground at 8pm.
RARANGA CLASS.
Raranga is the ancient art of flax
weaving. Learn to weave a flower, bracelet, star or fish.
Age is open but children 5-10 will need an adult to help.
Materials supplied. Starts 9.30am until around 3pm.
GO NATIVE.
Many weedy species are invading and
damaging natural areas. Learn natives from non native.
Free booklet ‘‘Plant Me Instead’’. 11am start.
CAPTURING THE STONE.
Learn how to create a
beautiful necklace out of your favourite stone. Other
materials supplied. Ages 10+, younger children will need
the use of adult fingers. 11am start.
GEOCACHING
is like a high-tech treasure hunt.
You’ll need a GPS or smartphone with a GPS App.
10am start.
FILM MAKING.
The Big Picture is all about finding a
conservation message that you can deliver in a quick
creative way. Let’s get it all down on film and if it rocks,
enter it into The Outlook For Someday! 9 am start.
