The original town of Waikino with Victoria Battery on the other side of

the Ohinemuri River. The flood of 1981 swept away buildings next to the

river. Tailings from the goldmines caused frequent flooding downstream.

Victoria Battery Tour

The Howick Probus Rotary group treated themselves to a lovely

excursion. They took the Waihi-to-Waikino train, lunched at the

Station Cafe, then trammed through the sights at the Victoria

Battery. See video here:

ARRANGING A VISIT. A sandwich board on the Walkway-Rail Trail indicates

visitors can walk or cycle up the hill to the concrete Transformer House.

Two flags flutter on poles outside the building when open.

There are reasonable charges (special prices for families) for the tramway ride

and guided tours. GROUP BOOKINGS can be arranged on days not normally

open. For SCHOOL GROUPS, each teacher-in-charge receives a Teacher

Resource Kit for added classroom study.

For the less active or disabled folks, the tramway can pick-up/drop-off at

the carpark area or at the Ohinemuri River Walkway bridge from the Waikino

railway station. To make special arrangements, read details on the Victoria

Battery Tramway & Museum Society website, or email

info@vbts.org.nz.
