This was the first time I’d ventured North from
Whitianga and discovered the gem that is Kuaotunu ! Just
15 minutes in the car, it feels like a world away from
Whitianga, and I understood immediately what draws so
many people to this area. Relaxed and understated, it has
a very different feel, and I embraced the ambience, sitting
for ages watching people come and go.
The Blackjack Gallery and Espresso was right behind me and
had already provided delicious coffee for my quiet
contemplation. and Luke’s Kitchen next door was warming up
their famous pizza oven, and I was salivating at the thought!
I was on my way to visit Michael Smither & Gian McGregor in
their artists’ studio at Otama Beach, pausing for refreshment
on my way. I walked down to the Kuaotunu shore and along
the beach, leisurely absorbing the view despite the clouds
spreading across the sky. I realised when I got back in the car
that I had a really big smile on my face.
