H 25 takes you west toward Coromandel Town, through Te Rerenga.
The Waitekuri and Opitonui Rivers flow from the Coromandel Range
through the area to drain in the Whangapoua Harbour.
It's well worth stopping at Castle Rock Cafe for a delicious meal and to
browse the adjoining gift shop where you'll find Owner Andy's yummy
home-made goodies, including a local favourite – Strawberry, Lemon and
Mint vinegar dressing. They also offer accommodations.
The drive enters hilly often steep wooded territory, with the road making
dramatic switchbacks, occasionally opening up to stunning vistas.
Historic Coromandel Town has a unique character, soul and ambience
reflecting art and heritage. It is a haven for talented artists and
craftspeople. The discovery of gold in 1852 brought a boom to this town
as well, and the area has continued to flourish while retaining a rich stock
of surviving heritage buildings.
