more expansive beaches! Just as Kuaotunu residents try to hold back
time, residents of nearby Matarangi are going upscale and stylish. The
resort area started development in 1985, and it features a grass airstrip, a
small shopping area, and homes both ‘bachy’ and resort quality.
This enticing area offers a offers an awesome picture perfect 4.5 km
white sandy beach. An all-tide boat launch ramp and walkout fishing pier
is located around the spit on the Whangapoua Harbour side at the end of
the airstrip. An ideal location to enjoy sailing, kayaking, jet-skiing, surfing,
safe swimming, biking and long walks on the beach.
The shopping centre includes a general store, liquor shop, café, book
exchange and real estate offices with other ‘pop-up’ shops open over
summer. There are about 300 permanent residents, but in the summer
season the population explodes as those holiday makers flock in to soak
up the great warm weather activities and the family friendly beach. A big
draw of the area is the picturesque 18-hole Dunes Golf Resort Matarangi,
with dining and event facilities for up to 120.
