T
airua’s Murray Bain is chuffed! He recently won the 2014 Top Home
Hardware Store at the Build Link Conference and Tradeshow in
Auckland. Not bad as an owner of the business for less than two years.
Murray moved from Te Awamutu to get closer to the sea and go fishing
more. Murray’s wife is still a teacher there, but commutes to Tairua on
weekends and holidays.
Murray has already become a big personality generously supporting both
Tairua’s fishing and rugby clubs. His house, which he recently renovated,
is close enough to the rugby field he can watch the games from his deck,
and host the occasional post-game celebration.
“I love the game, and being supportive of the community is fundamental to
running a successful business here,” says Murray.
“We encourage more trades people to come to us for quotes and use our
services.” Under the Home Hardware franchise, Murray has the buying
power to offer competitive pricing for bulk purchases. “I’ll work to get a
quote within 24 hours”, he says, saving the builder both dollars and driving
time. With a goal of providing what Tairua needs, Murray’s Home Hardware
has also added the town’s first hire centre on the premises.

No description does justice to the powerful
presence of nature at Te Moata. Set in 344
hectares of native bush just north of Tairua,
this sanctuary hosts a variety of residential
retreats and workshops. A network of
walking tracks leads to streams, the labyrinth,
waterfalls and beautiful stands of native trees
including ancient Kauri.
Experience Te Moata for yourself. Enrol in a
retreat or book a stay in one of our cottages or
remote bush huts.
T
he Rugby League is ‘on the up’ in Tairua. Only four years ago they had their first team of Under
6’s; now Tairua broadly boasts four teams across four age groups Under 7, Under 9, Under 11,
and Under 13.
Over Queen’s Birthday weekend on Sunday 1 June, the youngest Taniwhas played a curtain raiser
match on the home soil of the Mighty Vodafone Warriors at Mt. Smart Stadium, before the Warriors
took on the Newcastle Knights. The U7’s played Northcote, with the U9’s against Te Awamutu.
“It was an incredible experience for all of our young players”, shares team photographer and fan
Michelle McEwan, “and a heap of fun for everyone who joined us!”
A FAMILY AFFAIR
Rugby League was introduced to the Tairua/Pauanui area by patron Warren Finnerty with the help of
Brett Rhind. They now have 40 local families involved in the sport.
The “MINI” and “MOD” versions of the game provide a safe, fun game that all the players get
involved in. It also provides great viewing for families and supporters.
The teams play on Sunday mornings. Under 7 & 9’s Kick off at 10am, followed by the U11’s at 10.45,
and U13’s at 11.30 am.
The last home game of the season will be played on Sunday 22nd June.
