COROMANDEL LIFE
SPRING 2013
Pauanui Launch and Wine Trail
adds new event
Coro Flavours @ the Quays
This year, the Pauanui Business Association
has expanded its popular fundraiser, the
Pauanui Launch and Wine Trail (a wine tasting
tour conducted aboard various launches), with
the land lovers Coro Flavours @ the Quays,
featuring Coromandel based food/products
and wine/beer stalls. Both events transpire on
Saturday 9 November.
The Pauanui Launch & Wine Trail, already sold
out, cruises to four distinct wine properties
on the Waterways canal system: Redmetal
Vineyards (Hawkes Bay), Sileni Estates
(Marlborough), Terra Sancta (Central Otago)
and the Mercury Bay Estate (Coromandel).
The launch wine tour lasts from noon to 4 pm,
ending at the Coro Flavours event.
Those wanting to enjoy the Coro Flavours at
the Motu Hei, can visit the event between 2
and 7 pm. The launch tour vineyards will all
have tasting tents, as will Epic Beer. Other
stalls will feature Kiwi food, local produce
and merchandise. Relax on the banks of the
waterways, sipping wine, eating good food and
relaxing with friends.
Music will be provided by Our Locals and Paul
Ubana Jones. Tickets to just the Coro Flavors
are $20 in advance, $25 day of event.
Ferry service is available from Tairua, with bus
service routing within Pauanui looped at 5, 6,
and 7 pm.

Those successes drew more support, funds,
and grants, until finally the club now owns,
operates and manages two vans.
SERVICE AND COMPANIONSHIP
And drivers? That is part of the programme’s
success. Ten volunteer make it all work.
Laurie explains, “We have ten drivers who
transport our seniors to various medical or legal
appointments, travelling as far as Auckland,
Hamilton and Tauranga hospitals. Before the
van, volunteers were kind enough to drive these
people in their own vehicles, most of which
were not equipped for those in wheelchairs.”
The van also provides a weekly shopping trip to
Thames and is used to transport seniors to the
club’s luncheons and other social functions.

As dreamt, so becomes reality. Margaret Chick,
owner of TAll’s Tairua decided to make the
cafe’s yard into a community garden. She put
out the call for timbers, mulch, and volunteer
labour, and it worked.
A greenhouse, path timber lined planting beds,
and spiral raised herb garden are some of the
elements completed thus far.
Marg tells us that thanks to some woofers from
TeMoata Retreat Centre and local volunteers,
the garden really took shape recently while

Drop by for something “yummy” to eat. Her
baked goods are legendary, and the cafe is
ready for summer with a new cooler and in the
gift shop, clever Kiwi themed wood signs made

THE TALK OF TAIRUA
NEW VAN FOR
FRIENDSHIP CLUB
The Tairua Care and Friendship Club is on a roll,
literally. Determined fundraising over the years
accumulated enough money to buy wheelchair
accessible transport vans, with the second
(costing $85,000) added this July.
The Waikato District Health Board realised that
aging boomers would put a strain on public
transport options within the WaikatoTransit
Authority district, especially remote locations
like Tairua. Their survey picked up the stellar
job done by the Friendship Club and they are
holding their campaign up as a model for other
communities also looking after frail seniors.
Club chairman Laurie Franks relates that the
first mobility van was purchased in 1992.
Slowly but surely by means of garden parties,
donations and cake stalls, etc. the bus fund
grew until the Club had $12,000 ‘serious
