From workshops to performances...

Creative Mercury Bay, in just its second full season of operation, is

offering the community a rich programme of workshops, performances,

and competitions for 2015.

“Most ambitious,” says CMB’s Jan Wright, “is the

documentary

filmmaking workshop

run by award-winning producer/director James

Muir. This March workshop will see a group of budding film makers

create a documentary from inception through to public screening.”

Muir explains that

two

documentaries will be

produced during the three-

weekend workshop. “Two

teams of six. Learning

is the name of the game

here!” Participants will learn

the entire scope of video

filmmaking, from setting

up the pro-quality camera,

plotting out the story,

working with the ‘actors’ in a

documentary framework, capturing good sound...then editing the final

product. The films will be screened publicly 7pm on Sat 28 March at the

Monkey House.

In Mid-February, the Auckland Youth Orchestra performed two concerts,

one a free outdoor open rehearsal. On June 6, audiences will get to see

Helen Moulder and Sir Jon Trimmer’s magnificent ballet/drama work,

“Meeting Karpovsky”.

Also in June is the CMB Winter Photography Competition. “We have

categories spanning the age-groups,” explains Jan, “aimed at celebrating

– through the themes of people, seascape and landscape – the quieter

winter world of Mercury Bay that summer visitors rarely experience.”

July 4 brings the award winning production of “The Bookbinder” to town.

“This intriguing production swept the awards at the NZ Fringe,” says Jan.

“It is a play with shadows, puppets, paper work...well, you’ll just have to

see it to believe it, and it is suitable for all ages.”

September 18, classical fans will enjoy the string/cello/piano ensemble,

NZ Trio, while November features the lively Miho’s Jazz Orchestra.

Creative connections

...

This all volunteer organization also pays special attention to the power of

the web, and its pages offer valuable listings to connect with professional

performers, teachers/mentors in all areas of the arts, and organizations.

“Need a ukulele band? Or perhaps a poet?” asks Jan. “This is

where you’ll find them! We maintain an arts events calendar, and all

Mercury Bay arts groups receive a free listing in the ‘Arts and Culture

Organisations’ section of the website.

“These listings instantly create a web presence for even the smallest

organisation, making it possible, with the click of a mouse, for potential

members to connect with like-minded people.”

Creative Mercury Bay... It’s the place to go for everything arts related.
