COROMANDEL LIFE LATE SPRING / HOLIDAY 2018
Explore
WAIHI BEACH
This pristeen 8km beach
is popular with surfers,
boogie boarders,
kayakers and kite
boarders and is known
as one of NZ’s safest
swimming beaches.
And perfect for a
leisurely stroll to enjoy
the fresh sea air! The
charming little town has some unique shops and galleries, as well as a
number of great cafés – some even right on the beach.
At the north end of the beach, a DOC track crosses the headland to
Orokawa Bay. With spectacular panoramic views of the ocean and
Waihi Beach, this walk is an experience all visitors remember. Beautiful
pohutukawa trees shelter a beach of sparkling white sand offering great
fishing, perfect picnicking, bush walking and surfing opportunities.
Swimming is not advised here due to the steep grade of the seafloor.
Nearby Homunga Bay also offers dense pohutukawa forest and
seclusion.
For info on these walks and more, or for a map, pop into the Waihi
Beach Info Centre in the village (opposite the Four Square) where a
friendly team will help you out.
Waihi Beach and Athenree:
Beaches, wetlands, and walkways
Orokawa Bay.
Athenree area walks focus on
wetlands/estuary restoration
The award-winning Athenree Saltmarsh Wetlands project is providing
a shoreline habitat for indigenous plants and animals, playing host
to some of the largest populations of threatened wetland species
within the Bay of Plenty. Explore this wetland via the 20min Athenree
Wetlands Loop Walk, accessible from Emerton-Steele Rd.
Southward enjoy the flat 3km Athenree Estuary Walkway trail from
Waihi Beach to Bowentown. An easy walk that highlights the beauty
of the estuary which also offers plenty of kayak launch spots. The
walkway’s entrance is opposite the award-winning Surf Shack Café
on Emerton Road, and the trail ends at the park in Bowentown. Along
the way, you will pass the location of the Athenree Homestead.
ALL THIS AND HOT POOLS TOO!
Athenree Hot Springs and Holiday Park offers two thermal pools – a
large one for everyone at 35 degrees, and the other an adults only
39.6 degree soak pool. Both are emptied and cleaned daily with no
chemicals added. Open to the public and free to Holiday park guests.
Arrive to the Tui’s birdsong, fall asleep
to the Morepork’s call. Our warmth and
serenity will awaken your soul. Cozy,
inviting interiors and open Maori
‘whare-nui’ style architecture complete
a sense of welcome only found here at
Grand Mercure Puka Park.
