Magnificent views like this is what you’ll see from the Windows Walkway. An easy 2.5km round trip walk passes through exciting tunnels and the relics of the Talisman and
Crown mining operations. The tunnel has four openings (windows) which look down on the gorge far below.

wetland of international importance.
The Trail also passes a globally rare landform
known as a Chenier plain, formed thousands
of years ago when the ocean lapped at the
foothills of the Hunua Ranges. Other reasons
to get off your bike along this stretch include
the thermally heated mineral pools at Miranda
Hot Springs, and the popular Kaiaua Fish and
Chip shop.
THAMES TO PAEROA AND TE AROHA
From Thames, it is 12km to Matatoki Cheese
Barn, an essential stop to watch the cheese
being made or pet the friendly animals. Be sure
to stock up on their award winning organic
cheeses, including recent winner, Cumin Seed
Gouda. A quick pint there or up the road at the
historic Puriri Pub reminds you that this trip is
not just about the cycling.
