THE ENDANGERED KIWI
The Kauaeranga Valley Visitor Centre (KVC) is proud to celebrate our kiwi as the
theme of the “2018-19 SUMMER FUN” Programme.
Join us for this year’s exciting ‘Summer Fun’ programme. It starts just after Christmas, with
creative activities, guided walks, fascinating talks, movie nights, close encounters with native
species, a fun day for families and much more. See more details on the following pages, check
out our facebook page or call the visitor centre for the latest updates. All funds raised will go
towards kiwi conservation on the Coromandel.
In 2006, the Coromandel Brown Kiwi population on the Thames Coast was on the brink of
extinction. Since then, the hard work of conservation groups has seen its numbers triple.
With Thames Coast and Whenuakite Kiwi Care groups, DOC, and others in the community
working together, the dream is that one day the call of the kiwi will be commonplace again. Of the
four types of North Island brown kiwi, the local Coromandel bird is the rarest, so come to KVC this
year, take part in the activities, and be part of bringing our iconic bird back to this beautiful area.
