Kiwis enjoy their summer like none I’ve ever known
and in this issue we celebrate the keen sense of fun
that comes with it, and the many forms it takes –
times at the bach, sand sports, water sports, hiking,
golf, horseback riding, gardening, time for family
visits and more.
These days may be carefree for the holidaymakers,
but this is the season Tairua and Pauanui shop
owners discover the “busy” in businesses – ‘making
hay while the sun shines’ and ‘gathering those nuts’
for those lean winter months.
Stories have life of their own
... and they just won’t
be turned loose until we uncover the “meat” of the
articles. Each issue, there is some “deep story” we
find – a story hidden in a painting; the fantail story
that leads us to an fascinating myth. This issue, it was
Tairua Rugby.
We thought the rugby spread was a done deal; we
were using articles we didn’t have room for in the
Spring issue. But as we started fact-checking the
comeback of rugby in the ’70s, we came upon a box
of clippings that chronicled two legendary events!
Invitationals that would draw All Blacks and other well
known provisional players to Tairua!
Art plays its part.
As always, art plays a strong role
in PakuViews, and is a star in the Summer issue. We
were delighted to discover the history of the colourful
baches, and to know two artists, Rachel Olsen and
Souzie Speerstra, who love to have them pose.
One of the most exciting art related activities is The
Mercury Bay Art Escape, two weekends in March
where select artists open their studios for self-guided
tours (see p6). We plan to organise a tour for those
that would prefer to leave the driving to someone
else. (Please contact me by phone or email for more
information.)
Ink in our blood.
I’m not the only one willing to
‘burn the midnight oil’ to bring PakuViews to you.
Matt Hishon, the talented guy that puts an awesome
design to our words and images, has stayed up
with me till the sun came up a few times. We are
looking forward to Matt, partner Donna and son,
Zanda moving to Tairua from Raglan soon. They are
currently building a home on Paku.
Carol Wright, editor and writer extraordinaire with
just enough design talents to make her an “all round”
PakuViews supporter, has been friend and co-worker
for over 25 years (many all-nighters together back
when we were using pasteboards and shooting
halftones).
All three of us have, as they say, “ink in our blood”
and we’re looking for another incredible person to
join us and help with marketing and sales
– any takers?
As far as counting our new years blessings, we
appreciate all your glowing comments and could not
have imagined how popular our community’s lifestyle
magazine would become in just two years! It’s very
gratifying to see it “flying off the shelves”, especially
the last issue. The 5,000 we print, which lasted
nearly 5 months in the past, all but disappeared in
the first two months! Thanks to all of you, especially
the advertisers, for supporting PakuViews.
Now get out in that sunshine and have some fun!

We forget what a quiet relaxed little community we live in until it explodes into life with the
Christmas holidays, signalling start of the official Kiwi Summer. The combined Tairua and
Pauanui populations leap from 1800 to over 20,000.
