MERCURY BAY ART ESCAPE ARTISTS
1 WENDY WALLS
Wendy is a mixed media artist who
combines gels, pastes, inks and paint
to create her vibrant paintings, utilising
new acrylic and media techniques. She
likes to ‘let the paint do its work’ and her
inspiration is from her environs: rural, beach
and garden. Wendy also encourages new
painters at her ‘Give it a Go’ workshops from
her gallery/studio in Whitianga.
2 JACQUELINE ELLEY
Get up close and personal with Jacquie’s
paintings and you’ll see things that aren’t
immediately visible. She describes it as
“enchantment lurking beneath the surface”
and challenges the viewer to think about
various environmental issues. Her light
boxes are created from plastics collected
from Taranaki beaches. Undertaking many
commissioned works, Jacquie enjoys the
special connections formed with valued clients.
3 TIM ALDRICH
Wood carver and sculptor, Tim credits his
father with teaching and inspiring a love
of working with fine wood. As a qualified
carpenter and joiner most of his life, he
appreciates the privilege of being able to
create beauty from our ancient timbers and
loves to share his skills by offering tuition.
A new focus for Tim: “Show me a photo of
your favourite catch, and I will carve a beautiful replica for you.”
5 ELLEN JACKSON
New to MBAE this year, Ellen’s experiences while
traveling the world are reflected in her painting,
drawing and more recently, in ceramics. Natural
materials, sourced locally, including earth-based
pigments and clay, are used in her site-specific art
with an environmental focus.
6 MEG AUTH
Nature is a major generator for Meg’s
jewellery often incorporating found
objects in her stunning pieces. Her
works following themes with each
piece uniquely handmade but having a
relationship with the others. From her
studio positioned above stunning Hahei
Beach, Meg’s jewellery celebrates items of the beach, manmade
and natural: surfboards, starfish and sea creatures.
7 IAN WEBSTER
Well-known 40 year Kuaotunu resident, Ian has
been potting since the 1980s. Much awarded,
his distinctive works adorn mantles and gardens
all over NZ and further afield. His sensual
female form sculptures, hand-carved scenes,
vases and planters are created from coiled clay
and moulds in a highly recognisable style. With
beach and bush as inspiration, the natural hues
of his glazes lend easily to garden settings.
