The Coromandel will be the classic car
capital of the South Pacific in March with
10 days of auto adrenalin in the area.
The action kicks off on March 22nd with the
craziest car show on the planet –
RUSTY
NUTS
– where over 50 classic cars and hot
rods will be parked on the sand right on
Waihi Beach, amongst sand castles and
beach volley ball.
The
Recliner Rockers
from Auckland will be
entertaining with live music on the beach.
The show is free to the public, and the cars
will be on the beach from 3:30 until 7:30pm.
Hot rods and classic cars look great on
display at car shows, but even better racing
around a dirt track! The following day,
Sunday 23rd March, the 6th annual
JALOPY
DUST UP
will be held at the Waihi Beach
dirt track from 10am. The old jalopies will be
racing “cat and mouse” style kicking up tons
of dust as they chase each other 4-5 laps.
A fun day with no official winners or prizes –
just loud V8 engined hot rods, classics and
vintage stock cars playing in the dirt.
The biggest celebration of the ’50s and ’60s,
SONY BEACH HOP
14, kicks off two days
later with a warm up Rock’nRoll dance at the
Whangamata Club on Tuesday 25th March.
The auto mayhem cranks up when over
1000 classic cars and hot rods from all
New Zealand hit Whangamata.There will be
cruises to Waihi, Tairua and Onemana Beach
over the first three days followed by the “big
ones” in Whangamata.
Over 100,000 people are expected to attend,
and they’ll be in with the chance to take
home their own classic through the Festival
Programme prize draw. Up for grabs is
a 1966 Ford Mustang, 1966 Ford Falcon
station wagon and Ford Mk2 Zephyr with
matching Retro Caravan. All vehicles will find
new homes.
Over 20 bands from the USA, Australia and
New Zealand will be performing songs from
the era over the 5 days, with Rock’n’Roll
dancing, vintage markets, and a Retro
Pin Up competition. More info at
